Northern Ireland Win European Championship Qualification Tournament

 

Northern Ireland returned home this week from Luxembourg after an historic win in the European Championships Qualification Tournament for Small Countries. This is the best ever result for the Northern Ireland team for many years and means the team qualify for the final round to be held in Luxembourg in June 2009.

The team started the tournament with a come from behind win against Faeroe Islands in a match that NI won 15-13 in the deciding 5th set.

Volleyball Coach Picks up Young Athlete Development Award

 

At the 2008 Sport Northern Ireland Coach of the Year Awards on Tuesday 10 June held at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, Dalriada school teacher Dr Ian Walker won the Young Athlete Development award for his outstanding work in volleyball coaching in Northern Ireland.

2008 UK School Games Volleyball Competition Draw

 

At mid-day on the Sunday 8th June the Team Managers for the 12 competing teams at the 2008 UK School Games gathered in the gardens area on Bath University Campus for the competition draw.

The draw for the 2008 UK School Games was overseen by Janet Inman, Welfare Officer for the event and Volleyball England Development Director. The draw for the Girls under-16 Competition was made by current Great Britain Volleyball Player, Denise Johns.

NIVA Women’s Beach Tour Gets Under Way

 

Craigavon Aztecs hosted the season opener for the 2008 NIVA Women’s Beach Tour at Portadown Sand Pad. A completely new line-up filled the entry card for the event, which introduced a completely new format for the Tour.

Melissa Traynor and Lucy Moore got the event underway with a 21-9, 21-10 win over local pair Fabiana and Charlotte.

QUB's Hamilton and Pilch Win First Beach Event of the Summer

 

A strong field lined up on Saturday 31st May at Portadown Sand Pad for the opening tournament on the NIVA Men’s Beach Tour 2008.

Former Tour winners and Olympic hopefuls rubbed shoulders with local players on a beautiful day with perfect conditions for volleyball – sunny and still.

The tournament format of two qualifying groups meant that the top ranked teams avoided each other in the opening matches.
