Ulster beat Trinity in Men's Premier League
University of Ulster, Jordanstown, 9 Feb 2008 - Ulster Corona Extra Men's Volleyball Team continued their winning form by defeating top of the table Trinity College Dublin 3-1 on Saturday.
It was the second match in a week for the Ulster team who had also defeated Queens University Belfast 3-1 on Wednesday night.
Against Trinity the Ulster team easily took the first and second sets, 25-16 and 25-18 before Ulster's opposite hitter Tom Napier had to leave the match to attend a friend’s wedding.
Ulster's middle hitter and captain Nick Wright moved into the opposite position and Tony Liken filled in the middle hitting position for the third and fourth sets.
The change seemed to bother the Ulster team and they lost a close third set 25-27 which wasn't helped by the referee blowing for the serve from TCD when the Ulster setter Thornton was not even on the court. In the fourth set the Ulster team got their game together to close out the set 25-16 and the match 3-1 with a middle kill from Tony Liken.
Ulster's Paul Spittle led all scorers with 29 points, 27 kills and 2 blocks. Ulster's Nick Wright contributed 12 kills and 4 blocks. The match MVP was Ulster's setter Brian Thornton who was helped with outstanding passing from Libero Mark Hazley. |
