Queen’s Sports Awards

Queen’s Annual Sports Awards commenced on the 7th of June in Whitla Hall at Queen’s University Belfast. It was a very glamorous evening hosted by the boxing champion Barry McGuigan. The hall was full with many sports and academic people, former and current athletes. There were many athletes but only few were nominated and awarded. 

Queen’s Ladies volleyball squad was part of the splendid ceremony too. For its’ double championship /Ni League and Cup/ the team was nominated for Team of the Year for second year in a row. Queen’s Ladies Volleyball squad was competing with sports like rugby, rowing, athletics, netball, others.

For all his hard work and patience, Alan Dowey deserved the Coach of the Year shortlist nomination. Queen’s Ladies volleyball congratulates Alan and says big ‘Thank you’.

Queen’s Ladies number 10 Claire Dowey was nominated for the Individual of the Year award. With more than 15 years of experience in volleyball, NI National League MVP award and being part of Northern Ireland’s National Senior Women squad, Claire was shortlisted for the last leg of the nomination where only two athletes were competing for the award. Claire missed it but the team is very happy with her success.

The star of the evening was Queen’s Ladies Volleyball’ setter Keissy Guerra. She was awarded Full Blues Award on stage. Keissy deserved this honour due to her participation in all tournaments through the year, excellent team spirit and outstanding performance. Well done Keissy!

The following Queen’s volleyball ladies went home with Part Blues Awards – Aoife Walsh, Samira Bouazzaoui, Adcharaporn Mumsalee. 

Queen’s Ladies Volleyball would also like to congratulate Queen’s Men’s Volleyball captain Patrick Crooks for his second Full Blues Award.
